After four and a half years leading a major colocation data centre retrofit, Tony Shaw, Deputy Project Director at Equans Data Centers, reflects on the leadership lessons that helped navigate complexity, build resilience and maintain alignment across large project teams. It is shaped by how we bring people, decisions and systems together under pressure, and how we maintain clarity in the face of constant complexity,” said Tony.

Delivering construction works within an operational data centre presents a unique set of challenges. Projects must progress without disrupting live services while multiple contractors, suppliers and stakeholders operate across the same environment.
One of the most significant challenges during delivery was maintaining alignment across teams in a fast-moving and highly regulated setting. Achieving this required structured communication, clear accountability and a strong on-site leadership presence throughout every stage of the programme.
Looking back on the day-to-day realities of working in a live operational environment, Tony Shaw points to communication as one of the most important factors in maintaining progress and reducing risk. “The biggest challenge was coordinating multiple subcontractors working in the same areas across a large and active site. Communication had to be constant to keep everything moving in the right direction.”

Working closely with mission-critical infrastructure highlighted the importance of redundancy, commissioning and operational continuity. “Over the course of the project, I developed a deeper understanding of mission-critical infrastructure, including UPS systems, backup generators and a more evolved participation in Level 4 commissioning.”
